hether it's a cocktail or dinner party or a special family or friend's celebration, music is certainly a mandatory part of any good host's repertoire. Dimming the lights, introducing the guests, having good conversation over a glass of wine and a tray of hors d'oeuvres - can you imagine doing any of that without music?

And if it is live music, your guests' enjoyment wells up with an added recognition that their host is a mature entertainer who leaves the canned music of the DJ to the less discriminating world of amateur party planners.

Bill Cook has been playing the black and white keys for over 50 years. He's an accomlished performer with a large inventory of great piano classics like As Time Goes By and River Stay Away From My Door. Bill uses the Roland G1000 Arranger, which is many instruments in one. For example, it has 28 piano voices from honky tonk to concert hall. "The piano is my mainstay instrument, but the Roland does a magnificent job as a synthesizer and can mimic hundreds of other voices as accurately as it does the piano," says Bill. "Ralph Marterie doing Man With A Horn is a favorite."

His background in music goes back to the early Fifties and for many years, he played with a number of big bands in central and northern New York State - groups that you probably never heard of, but the experience gave Bill a foundation in the Glenn Miller and Dorsey Brothers sound which he imitates on his synthesizer. There are times when you'd be hard pressed in closing your eyes and not believing you were in the room with the Elgarts or the Glen Gray Casa Loma Orchestra.
